A lucid yet blissful state in which you are deeply focused. It is nearly meditative but wide awake, the place where mental chatter quiets. If you are practiced in your craft, then you move with beauty and perhaps even expertise. This is flow. It is restorative and intrinsically linked to feeling joy and fulfilment in life. It can be found in the most mundane things, but especially in activities with clear goals and purpose, like cooking.
Cooking is a beautiful thing. It is process, alchemy and science. It is art and magic. It is kindness, it is love and nourishment. It is family, mostly female and yet also male. It is generational, historical and yet modern. It is friends and solitude. It is festive and spare. It is routine, even mundane and measured and yet also surprising, creative, messy and imperfect. It can reproduce memories and also has to the power to create new ones. It transports us through time, across bonds, boundary and place. It is ancient and yet ever anew with each time we step into the kitchen, with fresh ingredients and new intentions.
Eating is both necessity and joy. It is one of my greatest pleasures and how I have learned to connect with my body in health and the way in which I most easily connect with others, feeding, eating together, laughing, loving and filling hearts and bellies. My goal is to make you think about your approach to eating through this holistic philosophy and to connect with the process, ceremony, beauty and tools that surround this one thing we all must do, a most beautiful requirement in this life. May you have the great pleasure to eat in good company, even if that is just you and though every meal may not be spectacular, it is always a gift for which we can be grateful. Gratitude can change your whole attitude.
Practice makes perfect. Mastery comes with practicing one’s craft, every day if possible. Cooking, health and flow are forms of spiritual fitness. Much like physical fitness, you cannot do a sit-up a week and expect to maintain a strong core. I’m not telling you to cook every day, but there are many ways to connect with the process, your food and yourself. We aim to help wherever we can.
